Healthy styles trump trendy looks

By Ricki Jae Morris, My Salon Scoop writer

A new year calls for a new hairdo. Salon stylists from coast to coast dish the latest on hair trends. Ringing in 2010 are disconnected bobs, Snazzy LitesTM hair color, and healthy natural styles.

Here's what the stylists had to say:

Brooklyn, N.Y.
Stylist Hermie Fraser of Hermie's Salon said her clients are keeping their bobs, but adding a little more flavor.

"Disconnected bobs...with a little bit of softness," Fraser said is the latest version of the bob. She explained that the bob hairstyle is easy to maintain for the stylist and the client. Academy Award Nominee Taraji P. Henson has sported an example of a disconnected bob.

As for hair colors, Fraser said she's expecting to see a lot of red and gold tones with a few highlights.

Atlanta, Ga.
Stylist Brenda Waters said her clients are choosing to go healthy over trendy. "Many (women) are choosing to go natural...a lot of flat ironing and blow drying."

Waters also recommended a Keratin complex treatment for women who go from curly styles to straight. "A Keratin Complex Treatment...helps make hair manageable," she added. "(It's) good for the summer, (and it makes) hair more resistant to humidity."

Another popular style trend is face-framing hairstyles. An example of a face-framing style can be seen on gospel singer CeCe Winans in the January issue of "Sophisticate's Black Hair" magazine.
"(I see) face framing-layering. It brings out the (facial) features," Waters said adding that face-framing layers are cuts that soften around the face.

As for color trends, she said she's noticed a lot of caramel tones and blasts of bright colors like red and purple, which are added in by Snazzy Lites color clip-ins. "(Snazzy Lites are) very popular for women of all ages. (They are) a great alternative."

Snazzy Lites are clip-in color extensions, and are a healthy way to add a bit of fun color to your tresses. Colors range from their bodacious blacks and bubbly blonds to their more fun colors like playful pink, fierce fuchsia, and tranquil turquoise. One package of the colored human hair costs $11.99 and can be bought on the company site at www.snazzylites.com.

To find the best look, Waters suggests women be open. "Get creative with your hair," she said. "Add curls to your bob or...braid around the sides. Ask your stylist for recommendations."

Phoenix, Ariz.
Salon stylist CoCoa Chantilly of CoCoa's Braids and Extensions said the popular style for braids is basic straight with the hair loose at the ends. What she would like to see are Fishtail braids, Bantu Knots and Corkscrew.

Chantilly is skilled in more than 59 braid techniques. Her specialty is tracking and undetectable braids.

"(With tracking) take (a) section of the hair, take a little bit of thread and wrap the hair," she explained adding that the tracking method helps give your natural hair a rest because none of your hair is exposed, which keeps your hair from the wear and tear of styling.

If you live in the Phoenix area, the hot, dry weather calls for special hair treatments. For her clients, Chantilly recommends chemical blowouts done to help keep their hair in line. Chantilly explained that a chemical bowout is when you don't leave a chemical relaxer on for the requested time removing only a small amount of natural curl pattern.

Miami, Fla.

Hairstylist Ericka Brown of Head Hunterz Barbershop said the women of Miami are still rockin' the short haircut, but with a twist. Exaggerated bangs, like the ones pop star Rihanna wears, reign supreme. As for color, women are going all out.

"(There's) a lot of hair dying," Brown said. "(Clients) are into a lot of different colors like pink."

However, Brown added that because of the economy, she and her salon co-workers are recommending their clients go natural. "It saves on the price of hair."
